Bowel Cancer Awareness Month at Wandoan Pharmacy
June is dedicated to Bowel Cancer and to get more people aware of this horrible disease. It claims the lives of 77 Australians every week and is the 2nd most common type of newly diagnosed cancer in Australia and it affects both men and women almost equally. BOWEL CANCER is the second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer. (Source: bowelcanceraustralia.org/about-bowel-cancer) The risk increases with age and if you’re over 50 years of age it increases significantly. Other risk factors are family history, smoking, excess alcohol intake, lack of exercise and unhealthy diet. In 2006 the Australian Government introduced the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program which provides free screening to eligible Australians (at the age from 50). You receive it per Mail and send it back per Mail. This programm is expanding and by 2020 all Australians between 50 and 74 years will be offered a free screening every two years. Source: National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, Australian Government The data comes automatically from the Medicare Register and if you are eligible you should receive a free bowel cancer screening kit. If you haven’t received yours, please contact Queensland Health per Phone 07 46 16 68 48. If you are younger than […]
Recently we received a lot of questions about probiotics. So we thought we tell you the most important details and introduce you to our available products. We even have prepared a PDF information for you, find more information about it below. Things you should know about Probiotic What are Probiotics? “Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as something that causes diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.Probiotics are naturally found in your body. You can also find them in some foods and supplements.”(http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/features/what-are-probiotics) “The human gastrointestinal tract is home to more than 400 bacterial species both beneficial and harmful. The normal flora includes a variety of microorganisms, when they overgrow they may become harmful. This overgrowth can occur due to reduced levels of competitive organisms (beneficial bacteria).” (Source: Probiotics Guide, Ethical Nutrients) What are they good for? Probiotics help move food through your gut and may assist in maintaining the balance of good bacteria. Researchers are still trying to figure out which are best for certain […]
GLOWING SKIN FOR NEW YEAR
The summer has arrived and we are getting out our skirts and short pants etc. A nice sun-kissed skin becomes most desirable. Today we want to show you and introduce you to the tanning products we trust with some extra tips. Jbronze We store a range of Jbronze by Jennifer Hawkins from Shimmer instant Illuminsier to Tanning products. All these products will give you an instant tan. The tanning products are available in form of Mousse, Cream or Spray and in two colours: Medium for fair/light coloured skin & Dark for dark skin tones. All tanning products are quiet dark looking but the main reason behind that is to avoid a orange tone. It is easy to apply and give a lovely sun kissed look. Personally we prefer the mousse which is very easy to apply. Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E NATURAL BRONZE Body Lotion It’s a gradual tanning moisturizer with natural cocoa butter and you can use it daily for your whole body and face. Dove summer glow Gradual Self Tan Moisturizer comes in 2 shades. One for fair to medium skin and the other one for medium to dark skin. It has a lovely scent and gives you nice tanned skin if you use it daily straight […]
Short history of the Wandoan Pharmacy
We’ve found some old photos of the Wandoan Pharmacy in the early days that may be of interest! The pharmacy was opened in Royds Street, Wandoan in 1957 by Mr Don Chenhall at the shop now occupied by the hairdresser salon owned by Nancy Davies. Don was a soldier settler and in 1954 owned the property called “Coolibah” where he lived with his wife Margaret and family. The original Chemist shop Don Chenhall Margaret Chenhall Eventually, Don sold the business to Mr Les Cadzow who moved the pharmacy to one half of new premises at 34 Royds Street. The other half of the building was occupied by the Hopgood plumbing business. Do you remember Bud Ford’s dental torture chamber on the vacant block next door? Les continued the business there till the end of 1968 when he sold it to me. I graduated from the University of Queensland and began my career as a community pharmacist. After a few years, I expanded into the other half of the building as a gift shop, and in 2006 the pharmacy was moved again to new premises with […]

National Stroke Week (14.09.-20.09.2015) Review
We took part in the National Stroke Week (organised by the Stroke Foundation) between the 14th and the 20th of September, and we were excited about the willingness and support from our local community. Many people came and saw us, to have a free Know your numbers health check and go in the draw to win a FitBit Flex, which was kindly donated by the Stroke Foundation. Eileen took Mrs Olsen blood pressure and health check. On Friday evening we drew the winner and we are thrilled to announce that Mr Terry Holland from our local Post Office won the FitBit Flex. He was very excited as well and he is wearing it with pride. And the winner is….. Dinah Fraser congratulates and hands Mr Terry Holland his FitBit Flex. Everyday we offer blood pressure checks as well as cardiovascular and diabetes risk assessment, and a chance to chat about any health concerns. Just come and see us, no appointment needed. Here is some information about STROKE: One Australian suffers a stroke every 10 minutes. That’s 1000 strokes every week! We are the Wandoan Pharmacy
Today we would like to introduce ourselves and give you some background information on the pharmacy. Welcome to the Wandoan Pharmacy, my name is Dinah Fraser and I’m a pharmacist and owner of the business. I arrived in Wandoan after purchasing the Wandoan Pharmacy in the late 1960’s. In our next blog you can read more about the history of the local pharmacy but for now back to us. Wandoan has been a great community to live and work in. I live on a small beef cattle property just out of town where we brought up two sons. They attended the local state school and went on to achieve tertiary qualifications. There was plenty of opportunity for sports – tennis, football, cricket, pony club and swimming. I was a foundation member and secretary of the Wandoan Chamber of Commerce and also the Juandah Heritage Society. My name is Eileen Rau and I’m originally from Germany and moved to Australia four years ago. I have been working as a Pharmacy Assistant here since April 2014. I obtained an education as a doctor’s assistant and later worked amongst others as a sale assistant for the Italian fashion brand DIESEL. The work […]
Community Page launched to support Western Downs
Denella James, of the Bushlander Motel in Wandoan, has been instrumental in suggesting ideas for how the Shop My Town program would work in the Western Downs. Because we build the platform from scratch for each area, we are able to incorporate the specific needs of that region. However, we believe Denella’s idea is so powerful, we will be including it in every region we go to. The new Community page is a place for all local community groups to tell their story online – for free. Each community group is eligible to use the web tools for free. Why would you want to do this? Well there are 11,000 people using Facebook in the Western Downs. And we know how commonly people search Google to find out what is on in the region. Your community group is able to reach these people by writing articles on this new page, and sharing them on to Facebook. These articles or posts about your group can then be shared across the community. Shop My Town is a community engagement model, to assist you to reach out to your community in the online world. This will create a place for the whole community to discover […]

Introducing our new page on Shop My Town!
We are so excited to launch our new page on Shop My Town Western Downs! The Bushlander Motel has entered the digital world in a new way. We are now able to communicate with you through our online blog, and our updates and articles will give you a peek behind the scenes! Get ready to read our story, and hear all about any events happening at our beautiful restaurant. Our team enjoy delivering a world class experience for every person who stays in our Motel, and all our lovely regulars who eat in the restaurant.
I will never forget my first introduction to Wandoan. I thought I came from a small country town! Nope! This place is the real deal. One small, dusty street, with probably the warmest and most genuine bunch of people I’ve met. When you live in a bigger town like Gatton, you get to choose the company you keep. Yeah, you know everyone’s face, but that’s not really living in community is it? Countless times now, I’ve told people how I sat around Kaylene’s table in her shop, having a cuppa with whoever walked in, unannounced, some bearing plates of fresh scones. Lets just say I’ve never had a local drop into my place with a fresh batch of scones, but I will be encouraging it! This town has a vibe about it, and I believe the outside world is craving this sort of connection. The bigger the town gets, the busier life gets and true community gets bled out. Australia is becoming a very different place, very fast. I’m looking forward to getting to know the locals in Wandoan and the Western Downs a whole lot better, as we spread the good news of country living through Shop My Town. […]
